This is a list of common chemicals and where you can find them or how you can make them.

acetic acid (CH3COOH + H2O)
Weak acetic acid (~5%) is sold in grocery stores as white vinegar.

acetone (CH3COCH3)
Acetone is found in some nail polish removers and some paint removers. It may sometimes be found labelled as pure acetone.

aluminum (Al)
Aluminum foil (grocery store) is pure aluminum. So is the aluminum wire and aluminum sheeting sold at a hardware store.

aluminum potassium sulfate (KAl(SO4)2•12H2O)
This is alum that is sold at a grocery store.

ammonia (NH3)
Weak ammonia (~10%) is sold as a household cleaner.

ammonium carbonate [(NH4)2CO3]
Smelling salts (drug store) are ammonium carbonate.

ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH)
Ammonium hydroxide may be prepared by mixing household ammonia (sold as a cleaner) and strong ammonia (sold in some pharmacies) with water.

ascorbic acid (C6H8O6)
Ascorbic acid is vitamin C. It is sold as vitamin C tablets in the pharmacy.

boric acid (H3BO3)
Boric acid is sold in pure form as a powder for use as a disinfectant (pharmacy section) or insecticide.

butane (C4H10)
Butane is sold as lighter fluid.

calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
Limestone and calcite are calcium carbonate. Eggshells and seashells are calcium carbonate.

calcium chloride (CaCl2)
Calcium chloride can be found as a laundry booster or as a road salt or de-icing agent. If you are using the road salt, be sure it is pure calcium chloride and not a mixture of various salts.

calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)
Calcium hydroxide is sold with garden supplies as slaked lime or garden lime to reduce soil acidity.

calcium oxide (CaO)
Calcium oxide is sold as quicklime at builder supply stores.

calcium sulfate (CaSO4 * H2O)
Calcium sulphate is sold as plaster of Paris in craft stores and building supply stores.

carbon (C)
Carbon black (amorphous carbon) can be obtained by collecting soot from the complete burning of wood. Graphite is found as pencil ‘lead’. Diamonds are pure carbon.

carbon dioxide (CO2)
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, which sublimates into carbon dioxide gas. Several chemical reactions evolve carbon dioxide gas, such as the reaction between vinegar and baking soda to form sodium acetate.

copper (Cu)
Uncoated copper wire (from a hardware store or electronics supply store) is extremely pure elemental copper.

copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4) and copper sulfate pentahydrate
Copper sulfate may be found in certain algicides (Bluestone™) at pool supply stores and sometimes in garden products (Root Eater™). Be sure to check the product label, since many different chemicals may be used as algicides.

helium (He)
Pure helium is sold as a gas. If you only need a little, simply purchase a helium-filled balloon. Otherwise, gas supplies usually carry this element.

iron (Fe)
Iron skillets are made of elemental iron. You can also pick up iron filings by running a magnet through most soils.

lead (Pb)
Elemental lead metal is found in lead fishing weights.

magnesium sulfate (MgSO4 * 7H2O)
Epsom salts, usually sold at a pharmacy, are magnesium sulfate.

mercury (Hg)
Mercury is used in some thermometers. It is more difficult to find than in the past, but many home thermostats still use mercury.

naphthalene (C10H8)
Some mothballs are pure naphthalene, though check the ingredients since others are made using (para)dichlorobenzene.

propane (C3H8)
Propane as sold as a gas barbeque and blow torch fuel.

silicon dioxide (SiO2)
Silicon dioxide is found as clean sand, which is sold at garden and building supply stores. Broken glass is another source of silicon dioxide.

potassium chloride
Potassium chloride is found as lite salt.

sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)
Sodium bicarbonate is baking soda, which is sold in grocery stores. sodium chloride (NaCl)
Sodium chloride is sold as table salt. Look for the uniodized variety of salt.

sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
Sodium hydroxide, also known as Lye, is a strong base that may sometimes be found in solid drain cleaner (Red Devil Lye™). The pure chemical is waxy white solid, so if you see other colors in the product, expect that it contains impurities.

sodium tetraborate decahydate or borax (Na2B4O7 * 10H2O)
Borax is sold in solid form as a laundry booster, all-purpose cleaner and sometimes as an insecticide.

sucrose or saccharose (C12H22O11)
Sucrose is ordinary table sugar. White granulated sugar is your best bet. There are additives in confectioner’s sugar. If the sugar is not clear or white then it contains impurities.

sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
Car battery acid is about 40% sulfuric acid. The acid can be concentrated by boiling it, though it may be heavily contaminated with lead, depending on the state of the battery’s charge when the acid was collected.

zinc (Zn)
Zinc blocks may be sold by some electronics supply stores for use as anode. Zinc sheets may be sold as roof flashing at some building supply stores.

Life began
for a woman and a man
upon their meeting perfection was at hand.
All things shared
their souls bared, hearts scared
they explored the limits of life and love
a new life
innocent and pure
A plague or a cure?
love is tested,
pushed, and pulled,
torn apart and trapped again
the seeds are there
the soil is bare
the water no where to be seen.
Left waiting are the seeds…
the seeds of love.

In my head, thoughts whirl and spin.
In my head, words come to me, I fear to speak them.
In my head, I see the future as two roads, one to emptiness, one to love.
In my head, emptiness looms, covering love in gloom.
In my head, love sings, sweeping away the gloom as it cleans.
In my heart plays a song, light and lofty, shining with love.
In my soul, dreams crumble like coal, winds of change carry the ashes.
In my soul, wings of angels carry my love, hold onto my dreams.
My mind twists with my thoughts, my ideas.
My heard trembles with my emotions, my feelings.
My soul trifles with my reality, my dreams.
I spin with confusion,
turning to run,
staying to deal,
turning to run,
staying to heal,
turning to hide,
staying in stride with the twisting,
turning,
spinning,
whirling,
confusion…
of love in question…
Questioning reality…
Questioning existence…

You’ve put sunshine in my heart,
 and moonbeams in my eyes.
All the stars now sparkle like
 diamonds in the sky.
Before I met you,
 my wings were bound,
by broken dreams,
 and a song without sound.
As our friendship grew,
 I heard the sound,
of notes in a song
 That was played by you.
I felt my bonds weaken
so I stood up to see
that the song from your heart
 had set my wings free.
As I rose from the earth,
 and looked all around,
I saw you there
 shackled tight
to the ground.
 I tucked in my wings.
I dove toward the sound
of that song that I heard,
about love without bounds.
 Now as I land,
my feet touch the earth,
 I open my arms,
and offer you truth
 to free your mind,
as your song freed my heart.

I finally got fed up with the inconsiderate people at Canonical. I started on Ubuntu with 8.04, and now with 11.04 and the idiotic restrictions of the Gnome3 desktop preferences, as well as numerous repairs of video problems, mostly caused by a lack of attention to ATI cards, I have had enough. Who then is my new friend? you ask, Arch Linux. I have always been a DIY Linux user, and now I have all the tools that I need to easily maintain my system with minimal resources and I get to choose how my Arch looks and behaves. Now it’s so long and goodbye to you Mr. Ubuntu and your Canonical cookie cutter world. It is clear to me that Ubuntu no longer means community in the accepting and enlightened way, but has become Community in the Big Brother do it their way. I have no tolerance for indifference to creativity and exclusion of self expression. And thanks to the failure of the Canonical steering committee to account for the creative punk in me, I am now three days behind on my analysis report.

I am not sure how many days it has been since my last entry so I am not going to try to guess, instead I have decided on the heading of “entry” to supplant the former heading of “day.” I have mined out a large room which I made into my living quarters and illuminated with torches. There are some advantages to living underground, for one I cannot hear the rattling of bones nor the skittering of giant spiders nor the moaning of lost souls. The disadvantages, I have come to realize, are more perilous than the sounds of night creatures; I was nearly smothered by a collapse of sand as I mined too close to the underside of a large patch of the stuff, and gravel is no safer; although, I did find large bits of flint in among the pebbles and stones. To top that all off I have lost all reference of time as I have not seen sun nor moon for some time now. Rations are running low so I must go out and forage for food at dawn which I hope will be here shortly. I have just finished crafting a large stone knife, or a short stone sword, depending on how you look at it. I will use this new sword-knife to get some fresh meat…

During the night I heard many of the same noises as were present in the dunes this made it difficult to sleep so I began work on a crafting table, a sort of workbench, on which I fashioned a tree branch into a crude shovel and another into a pick. I immediately began testing the tools I made by digging my shelter into the hill side and down a few meters. Before long I had broken my pick and had to return to my table to make new tools, this time I made the heads for the spade and pick out of some stones that I had wrested from the ground. I returned to digging and a while later I found something very soft and sooty in the stone below my new hovel. When I returned to my bench I noticed that the sun was rising… wait no it seems to be setting… how long was I down there?. I continued pondering while I looked over the materials I had loosed from the ground. There was some stone that I cobbled together to make a floor in my new home, then there was some rust colored mineral that I presumed to be iron ore and some black sooty coal that I could use to smelt the iron. Using some stones cobbled together I made a furnace in which I smelted the iron ore into iron bars then I wrought the bars into the head of a spade and a pick and an ax and attached good hardwood handles. The sun had set by then so I used some of the coal and sticks to make torches to give me better light deep under ground.
